Competitive angling may not be the first sport people associate with broadcast infrastructure, but the build behind Fish O’Mania called for the same precision as any major sporting venue we work on. Our team was on site at Westwood Lakes delivering the full event and broadcast infrastructure for Matchroom, with the competition airing live on Sky Sports.
Building on and around water changes the thinking on almost every element of a rig. Thirteen water platforms, each measuring 1.2m by 2.4m, were installed out on the lake to give every competitor a level and secure base to fish from, with three camera towers positioned around them to provide the elevated sightlines the coverage depended on. On dry land we installed the competitor boards, a stage platform and trussing backdrop for the presentation area, and the fencing and pedestrian barriers that kept spectators and crew moving safely around the venue. The PA system, complete with the klaxon that signalled the start and close of the match, tied the whole production together. Getting a build like this right over water takes real skill, and the crew who planned, built and ran it on the ground delivered it in full.
